Caring for cut flowers properly can help them stay fresh and vibrant for a longer period of time. Here are some simple steps to follow:
1. Trim the stems!
Use sharp scissors or shears to trim about 1-2 inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This will help create a larger surface area for water absorption.
2. Remove leaves!
Remove any foliage that will be submerged in water, as this can promote bacterial growth and shorten the lifespan of your flowers.
3. Use a clean vase!
Make sure your vase is clean before arranging your flowers in it. Wash it with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly to remove any dirt or bacteria that could harm the blooms.
4. Fill with water!
Fill the vase about two-thirds full with lukewarm water to provide hydration for your flowers.
5. Add flower food!
If you received floral preservative packets with your bouquet, mix them into the vase water according to the instructions provided. The preservatives contain nutrients and antimicrobial agents that help extend flower life.
6. Arrange your blooms strategically!
Place your freshly trimmed stems into the prepared vase, arranging them as desired while ensuring they have enough space between each other to prevent crowding and damage.
7. Display away from direct sunlight or heat sources!
Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or appliances that emit heat as it can cause wilting and premature fading of colors.
8. Change water regularly!
Every couple of days, change out the old water in the vase and replace it with fresh lukewarm water along with new flower food if available.
9. Trim stems periodically!
Trim about half an inch off each stem every few days to maintain their ability to absorb water effectively.
